Ties to the Land XVIII – Ashopton Viaduct, Derbyshire Peak District

Field Notes

Ashopton Viaduct carrying the A57 “Snake Pass Road” over the Derwent Reservoir in the Derbyshire Peak District. Directly underneath the viaduct lies the village of Ashopton, which during World War 2 witnessed its own demise as this viaduct was built above it prior to the valley being flooded.  The dams at Derwent were then subsequently used for practice by the Royal Air Force’s 617 Squadron.
