. Both economically motivated without a doubt. Here on the east of coast of South Uist the land is a lot less fertile. People probably would have moved here having been moved off the richer, flatter west coast and ultimately they would have emigrated (forced or otherwise) to Canada as a part of the Highland Clearances. A lot of people would never see Canada as they died aboard ship from diseases that were never present in the Hebrides like smallpox and typhus that they caught on board ship.
XXIV : Abandoned Croft, Staffin, Isle of Skye”In the end the land they left was given over to live stock, more often than not sheep.
