. Both economically motivated without a doubt. Here on the east of coast of South Uist the land is a lot less fertile. People probably would have moved here having been moved off the richer, flatter west coast and ultimately they would have emigrated (forced or otherwise) to Canada as a part of the Highland Clearances. In the end the land they left was given over to live stock, more often than not sheep.
