I’ve been exploring the edge of Stanage Edge in the Peak District lately. The Peak District is littered with abandoned millstones, no where more than Stanage. These stones were abandoned in place when the market for millstones from the Peak District (millstone grit) disappeared in the mid-18th century as peoples’ fondness for white bread increased as French millstones were introduced. Flour made using Peak District millstone grit was often grey.
