Field Notes

On open moorland above the Wyming Brook within the city limits of Sheffield, I found this rock.  I had heard of these before, but never came across one myself.  These carved rocks are small reservoirs for game birds like grouse to drink from.  Across the moorland at Stanage, particularly along the Edge there are dozens of these to be found in what is often a burnt and eroded landscape due to the  controled burns of the moorland in order to promote new growth of heather for the grouse to eat.
