Machair is grass land that is almost unique to the coastal sand dune areas of Scotland and in particular the islands of Scotland. Whilst appearing wild, it is a carefully controlled environment brought about by grazing, and is one that is vital as it holds together the dunes and ensures that the sea does not erode the land.
